Hey loves, it’s Gertrude!
If you’ve been following the beauty world lately, you know the “10-step glass skin routine” is officially out. Who has 45 minutes every morning to layer seven different serums? Not me, and probably not you.
Living a fast-paced life in the city means my skin often looks tired before I even finish my first latte. But over the last year, I’ve mastered the art of Skinimalism. It’s about using fewer products that work harder.
Here are the 5 non-negotiable tips that saved my skin barrier and gave me that “just had a facial” glow every single morning.
1. Ditch the Morning Cleanser
This sounds controversial, but hear me out. Unless you have very oily skin, your face shouldn’t be “dirty” when you wake up. Using a harsh foaming cleanser in the morning strips away the natural oils your skin produced overnight to repair itself.
My Tip: Just splash your face with lukewarm water. It keeps your skin barrier intact and ready to absorb your morning Vitamin C much better.

2. The “Damp Skin” Rule for Hyaluronic Acid
If you apply your Hyaluronic Acid or moisturizer to bone-dry skin, you’re doing it wrong! Hyaluronic acid is a humectant—it pulls moisture from its environment. If your skin is dry, it might actually pull moisture out of your deeper skin layers.
How I do it: I keep a face mist on my vanity. Mist, apply serum while the skin is still tacky, and then “lock” it in with a moisturizer immediately. The difference in plumpness is instant.
3. Vitamin C is Your Best Friend (But Quality Matters)
In the US and Europe, we love our sunshine, but the UV damage is real. Vitamin C isn’t just for brightening; it’s an antioxidant shield.
- Look for: L-Ascorbic Acid (around 10-15%) if you want the gold standard.
- Storage: Keep it in a dark drawer! If it turns orange/brown, it’s oxidized and useless.
4. Don’t Forget the “Neck and Dec”
I see so many women with glowing faces but dull, textured necks. Your skincare routine ends at your chest, not your jawline.
Gertrude’s Pro Tip: Whatever is left on your hands after applying serum or SPF, rub it onto the backs of your hands. They are the first place to show aging!

5. SPF is Non-Negotiable (Even on Cloudy Days)
You’ve heard it a million times, but I’ll say it again: The best anti-aging product is sunscreen. In Europe, we have access to some of the best filters in the world (look for La Roche-Posay or Altruist).
Find a formula that doubles as a primer. A tinted SPF can often replace your foundation entirely, giving you that effortless “model-off-duty” look.
