Wake Up Glowing: The 4-Step “Lazy Girl” Night Routine I Swear By
We’ve all been there. It’s 11 PM, you’ve just finished a long day (or a long Netflix session), and the thought of standing in front of the mirror for a 7-step skincare ritual feels like running a marathon.
The temptation to just face-plant into your pillow is real. But as your beauty-obsessed friend Gertrude, I’m here to tell you: Your skin does its best work while you sleep.
I’ve stripped my nighttime routine down to the absolute essentials. No fluff, no unnecessary layers—just four steps that guarantee you wake up looking refreshed, even if you only got six hours of sleep.
1. The Double Cleanse (Yes, Even if You’re Tired)
If you only do one thing, make it this. A single wash often leaves behind SPF and pollutants that clog your pores overnight.
- Step A: An oil-based balm to melt away the day.
- Step B: A gentle, hydrating milk cleanser to actually clean the skin.
Gertrude’s Hack: Keep your cleansing balm on your nightstand with a couple of reusable cotton pads. If you truly can’t make it to the sink, you can at least break down the makeup while sitting in bed.

2. Retinol: The Gold Standard
In the US and Europe, Retinol is the undisputed queen of anti-aging. It speeds up cell turnover and builds collagen.
My Advice: If you’re a beginner, start with a “sandwich technique.” Apply a thin layer of moisturizer, then your Retinol, then another layer of moisturizer. This prevents the dreaded “Retinol peel” and keeps your skin barrier happy.
3. The “Slugging” Lite (For the Dry Days)
You’ve probably seen “Slugging” (slathering your face in Vaseline) all over TikTok. While that’s a bit much for every day, I love a “Lite” version.
I use a Ceramide-rich recovery cream. Look for ingredients like Squalane or Centella Asiatica. It acts like a cozy blanket for your face, locking in all the goodness you applied in step 2.

4. Don’t Forget the Lips and Lashes
Nothing makes you look more “haggard” in the morning than crusty lips. A thick layer of a lanolin-based lip mask is non-negotiable.
The Extra Touch: I keep a lash-growth serum next to my toothbrush. It takes two seconds, and after six weeks, people will start asking if your lashes are real. (Spoiler: They are!)
The Morning After
When you wake up, your skin should feel “bouncy” and hydrated, not oily. This routine is all about supporting your skin’s natural 24-hour rhythm.

Sleep tight and stay glowing, Gertrude
